About St. George UT 

Found in the southwestern portion of Utah, St. George sits just on the Utah side of the state border with Arizona. St. George is the county seat of Washington County. It is the seventh largest city in the state of Utah, and one of the most populous. The entire city of St. George has about 64 square miles.

In 2012, Money Magazine ranked St. George as number 63 on the list of the top 100 places to live in the entire nation. With a stunning mountainous backdrop, and red canyon borders, the area of St. George is one of the most picturesque areas in nation. It is also generally the warmest part of Utah, where summers are long and warm, and winters are short and cool.

Despite the mountains in the distance, the community is typically more of a desert valley in atmosphere. The rare location puts it at the meeting place of the Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau and Great Basin. Both the Santa Clara River and Virgin River flow through the community of St. George. The city, itself, winds through the valleys, ravines, hills and mesas of the area.

St. George has a natural northern boundary made from the red sandstone bluffs. To the west are the Beaver Dam Mountains. To the east is the Colorado Plateau, with Zion National Park. The Arizona Strip makes up the southern boundary.

With mild, year-round temperatures, St. George is one of the state of Utah’s most sought after travel destinations. Popular tourist attractions include Zion National Park, a fantastic location for hiking or driving. Other popular destinations include Sand Hollow State Park and Snow Canyon State Park. St. George also is the home of Dixie State College.

St. George boasts a population of 75,561 people (2012). The majority of residents, 92%, live in an urban environment, with the remaining living in rural areas.

Like the state of Utah, the community is relatively young, with a median resident age of 32. St. George is an affordable area to live in, with the median household income at around $44,000. This is a little less than the average for the state.

Things To Do In St. George

When fall comes around, so does the St. George Marathon. It is one of the largest marathons in the country, and is Boston-qualifying. In the fall local residents welcome back the Washington County Fair just to the east of town.

The cost of living in St. George is slightly lower than the national average, but so is unemployment. The rate of unemployment in St. George, as of October 2013, was around 4.7%. This is much lower than the national average of around 7%. Top employers include Southwest Airlines, Intermountain Healthcare, and Dixie College.
